When looking at clothed pictures, the belly is often seen through a mass of if not concealing, billowing, unfastened robes. Because the tummy was the sole obvious anatomical aspect, it became exaggerated in nude depictions even though the remainder of the body was de-emphasised. This was real in southern Europe around the time from the Renaissance.
